Using AI to Create Stunning 3D Models for My Game: A Step-by-Step Guide
Welcome to this exciting blog post where we dive into the world of artificial intelligence and its incredible potential. Today, we will explore how AI can help create stunning 3D models for my game. As the world evolves, it's crucial to adapt and embrace new technologies. So, join me on this journey as we harness the power of AI to design and develop an amazing tower defense game.
Step 1: Brainstorming New Ideas
Every great project starts with brainstorming, and creating a new defense turret is no different. In the past, I would spend hours trying to come up with fresh ideas, but now I have a fantastic AI tool called Sidekick, courtesy of Newcleaner. With Sidekick, brainstorming has become a breeze. I simply ask the AI to generate ideas for a new turret, and it delivers a myriad of brilliant suggestions. One idea that caught my eye was the Tesla turret. It instantly sparked my imagination, and I knew it had to be in my game. Thanks, Sidekick!
Step 2: Bringing the Tesla Turret to Life
Having a 2D representation of the Tesla turret is cool, but since my game is in 3D, I needed a way to turn it into a 3D model. Luckily, there's an AI tool called Kdim that specializes in generating 3D meshes from 2D images. With Kdim, it took less than a minute to transform my 2D image into a beautiful, detailed 3D model. The AI's accuracy and speed were truly impressive. Although the auto-texturing wasn't perfect, I made some quick adjustments using temporary materials to enhance its appearance.
Step 3: Programming the Tesla Turret
Now that we have the Tesla turret in our game, it's time to give it some functionality. Instead of relying on AI to write the code, I took the challenge to do it myself. The turret's mechanics are fairly simple. It has a collision sphere surrounding it that constantly checks for nearby enemies. If it detects an enemy, it emits a line to evaluate if anything obstructs its path. If the line connects with the enemy, damage is applied until the enemy is defeated. To add an extra visual element, I utilized the Unreal Engine's particle system to create a stunning lightning effect. The Tesla turret is not limited to attacking a single enemy; it zaps all enemies within range. It's a truly satisfying sight to behold!
Step 4: Creating a New Enemy
No tower defense game is complete without enemies, so it's time to design a new one. I envisioned a stone golem as the perfect adversary. Using the AI tool Mid Journey, I generated several images of stone golems. However, getting a full body front view proved to be a bit challenging. Nevertheless, I managed to provide a suitable prompt to Mid Journey and got the desired image. Next, I used Kdim to generate a low-poly 3D model based on the image. The result was impressive, but still more of a block-out than a final character. Despite some overlapping blocks, the model looked good enough for now.
Step 5: Animating the Stone Golem
Unfortunately, there is no AI tool available at the moment to animate characters. So, I turned to Mixamo, where I found a perfect animation set for my stone golem, whom I named Bob. The animation set gave Bob the heavy and chunky movements I had in mind. It truly brought him to life. However, the block-out issue from Kdim became apparent during the animation. Some blocks overlapped, creating unwanted visual glitches. We'll need to address this in the future.
With Bob the stone golem now in my game, I am thrilled with the progress. His powerful and slow attacks fit perfectly within the tower defense concept. If you want to stay updated on the game's development, make sure to subscribe to the channel and join our Discord server (link in the description).
In conclusion, using AI has completely transformed the game development process. From brainstorming ideas to visualizing and animating characters, AI tools like Sidekick, Mid Journey, and Kdim have made everything more efficient and exciting. Embracing AI opens up endless possibilities, allowing us to create stunning 3D models quickly and effortlessly. If you haven't integrated AI into your creative process yet, I strongly recommend giving it a try.
